If you've read Asterix, you know that Obelix LOVES wild boar—roasted, grilled, or any way possible! While hunting an actual wild boar might be a bit much for dinner, we can make an easy, delicious, oven-roasted pork dish that gives the same Gaulish feast vibes.
✅ 1.5 kg (3 lbs) pork shoulder (or pork loin for a leaner option)
✅ 3 tbsp olive oil
✅ 1 tbsp honey (Gauls loved their honey!)
✅ 1 tbsp Dijon mustard (a little French touch)
✅ 3 cloves garlic, minced
✅ 1 tsp black pepper
✅ 1 tsp salt
✅ 1 tsp smoked paprika (for that roasted flavor)
✅ 1 tsp dried thyme (for a rustic taste)
✅ 1/2 cup apple cider (or apple juice)
✅ 2 tbsp butter
Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F).
In a small bowl, mix olive oil, honey, mustard, garlic, pepper, salt, paprika, and thyme.
Rub this mixture all over the pork shoulder. Let it sit for 10-15 minutes for extra flavour.
Place the pork in a roasting pan and pour apple cider around it.
Roast for about 2 hours, basting it with pan juices every 30 minutes.
In the last 10 minutes, add butter on top to give a golden, crispy finish.
Let it rest for 10 minutes, then slice and serve with roasted potatoes or a fresh salad.
The Gauls feasted on wild boar, but this easy version brings that Asterix & Obelix vibe to your kitchen without the need to hunt! Serve it up at a gathering, and you’ll feel like you’re at a Gaulish banquet—just don’t forget the mead or a nice apple juice for that medieval touch! 🍽️⚔️
Bon appétit, and may the Romans tremble! 🐗🔥
